How We Ended Up on the Same Sidewalk

Three people from three different corners of the country, meeting for a few minutes in a river town.

I spotted these two young men in downtown Petaluma this afternoon and asked if I could create their portrait.

Before long, they picked up on my Kentucky accent. One was from Los Angeles. The other from North Carolina. We spent a few minutes talking about where we were from and how we all ended up standing on the same sidewalk in Petaluma.

That's one of the things I enjoy about Rivertown Portraits. Most days we pass each other without a second thought. But every now and then a simple conversation reminds you how small the world really is.

Why I Carry a Camera

She gave me this look and a peace sign like we'd known each other for years.

This is why I walk around Petaluma with a camera.

Not for perfect poses or polished moments. Just real people with personality, style, and a little spark to them.

Met this wonderful woman downtown, asked if I could make her portrait, and she gave me this look and a peace sign like we'd known each other for years.

That's Rivertown Portraits. Small moments. Real people. The kind that make this town feel alive.

Some Angels Wear Hats

There are angels we don't always recognize. Sometimes they wear hats.

There are angels we don't always recognize. Not because they're hiding, but because they rarely draw attention to themselves.

Today I met Eduardo in downtown Petaluma.

At first, I noticed the hat. Then the tie. Then the way he carried himself. The kind of presence that belongs to another time.

We started talking. Eduardo is from El Salvador. He's a barber, a painter, a lover of The Beatles, and a devoted follower of the World Cup. He owns more than 35 hats and a camera collection that would make Ansel Adams smile.

As we talked, he told me he was never very good at math or history. Then he showed me his paintings. Let's just say God gave him different gifts. His artwork is extraordinary.

But what stayed with me wasn't the paintings, the cameras, or even his unmistakable sense of style. It was his kindness.

In more than twenty years, I can't remember meeting a stranger who left such an immediate impression on me. The way he welcomed conversation. The way he listened. The way he spoke about people. The way he carried himself with a quiet grace that seems harder and harder to find these days.

I know the local paper and others have told Eduardo's story before. But this wasn't their story. This was mine, and I bet there will be more to share.

A few unexpected minutes on a Petaluma sidewalk led to a visit to his studio next to Petaluma Pie and a conversation with a man I'd never met before, but probably would have walked right past had I not stopped to say hello.

One of the gifts of Rivertown Portraits has been discovering that some of the most remarkable people in our community are the ones most of us rarely take the time to know.

They're all around us. Walking down the sidewalk. Standing in line for coffee. Sitting a few stools away in a barbershop. Quietly making the world a little better than they found it.

There are angels we don't always recognize. Sometimes they wear hats.

Today, I think I met one.

His name is Eduardo.

A Beautiful Stranger

There was warmth in her smile and sincerity that felt genuine from the very first hello.

As she walked across the street, I commented on her sweater and we both laughed. A few minutes later, we were standing in the middle of Kentucky St. talking like old neighbors.

There was warmth in her smile and sincerity that felt genuine from the very first hello. The kind of person who reminds you that goodness still exists no matter our beliefs, backgrounds, or differences.

Sometimes all it takes is a small compliment, a quick conversation, and the courage to say yes to a beautiful portrait.

A Beautiful Mother-Daughter Moment

‘Was that for me or you?' Mom laughed, told her daughter what I said, and we all ended up with this shot.

‘Was that for me or you?' Mom laughed, told her daughter what I said, and we all ended up with this shot.

Caught this beautiful mother-daughter moment on the street.

I was walking next to mom when her daughter whistled to get her attention. I turned and asked, "Was that for me or you?"

Mom laughed, told her daughter what I said, and we all ended up with this shot.

Someone Always Shows Up

Slow down a bit… someone always shows up.

Petaluma Antique Faire last weekend.

You don't have to look very hard around here to find someone worth photographing.

Slow down a bit… someone always shows up.

Part of my Rivertown Portraits series.

Time Shows up in a Face

Time shows up in a face. Not loud. In the eyes, in the way someone carries himself, in a smile that doesn't need anything added.

"Time shows up in a face. Not loud. In the eyes, in the way someone carries himself, in a smile that doesn't need anything added."

Saw this gentleman downtown and said hello, asked if I could make a portrait.

He didn't hesitate.

Gave me a minute. A few frames.

Later on, you start to notice what's already there.

Time shows up in a face. Not loud. In the eyes, in the way someone carries himself, in a smile that doesn't need anything added.

That's what Rivertown Portraits are quickly becoming.

Nothing staged. No setup.

Just people here in town, willing to pause for a moment and be seen.

It's the same pull I feel when I photograph our parents and grandparents, before time moves on again.

I'll keep showing up and asking.

Every now and then, someone says yes.

This is one of those moments.

The Present

I didn’t start thinking much about time until it had already passed.

Most of my life moved fast. There was always something that needed doing. Work to finish. Problems to solve. People depending on me to show up and get things done.

When you live like that long enough, you don’t spend much time sitting still. You just keep moving forward because that’s what the day asks of you.

Then one evening the house gets quiet.

Not empty. Just settled.

You pour a little bourbon into a glass and sit down at the table, not really drinking, just letting the room breathe for a while. The noise of the day fades out and for the first time in a long while you notice the small things around you.

The clock on the wall.

It’s been there for years, quietly doing its job while life moved through the house. The same steady rhythm it has always had.

Tick.
Tick.
Tick.

Tick.
Tick.
Tick.

I’ve worn a watch on my wrist for most of my life. For years I thought that watch meant I was managing time. Schedules. Deadlines. Responsibilities. The next thing that needed attention.

But sitting there that night I realized something simple.

The watch measures the time we think we control.

The clock measures the time that keeps moving whether we notice it or not.

And the truth is, we don’t really own either one.

The past is already gone.

The future hasn’t arrived yet.

All we really have is the present.

Just this moment. A quiet room. The sound of a clock keeping time the same way it always has. A glass sitting on the table while a man finally slows down long enough to think about the years that brought him here.

Life has a strange way of teaching that lesson slowly.

For most of our younger years we’re too busy building a life to stop and look at it. Work fills the days. Family fills the years. Responsibilities stack up and time moves forward whether we’re paying attention to it or not.

Then eventually the noise fades a little.

The house gets quieter.

And the moments that once seemed ordinary start to feel a little more important.

That realization has slowly changed the way I think about photographs.

For years I’ve photographed landscapes. Quiet hills. Light breaking through clouds. Places where the world seems to pause for a second.

But over time I began noticing something else.

The photographs people treasure most aren’t usually the dramatic ones.

They’re the quiet ones.

A father sitting in his chair at the end of the day.

A mother standing near a window where the light falls just right.

A couple who have spent forty years side by side and don’t need to say much anymore.

Those photographs become important later.

Often later than we expect.

Because time keeps moving.

And one day the house gets quiet.

The chairs sit empty. The rooms still hold the light the same way they always did, but the people who filled them are gone.

And the photographs we once thought were ordinary suddenly become priceless.

That realization is what eventually led me to begin photographing what I now call Generational Portraits.

Not rushed studio sessions.

Just honest photographs of parents, grandparents, and couples who have lived long enough to carry their stories quietly in the lines of their faces and the way they move through a room.

Photographs taken in the spaces where their lives actually happened.

Because if time teaches us anything, it’s this.

We only have the present.

And sometimes the most meaningful thing we can do is preserve a quiet moment before it slips quietly into memory.

The Spirit of the Wild: Capturing Nature Through the Lens

Nature doesn’t pose. It doesn’t wait. It simply is.

In my years behind the lens, nothing grounds me more than watching animals move in their natural rhythm — unbothered, instinctual, and timeless. From silent deer in the redwoods to coastal birds gliding with purpose, each image in this collection was taken with patience, respect, and a deep sense of awe.

These wildlife moments weren’t staged — they were gifted.

The Nature & Wildlife collection is more than photography. It’s a reminder to slow down, look closer, and reconnect with the world around us. Whether it’s a proud hawk mid-flight or a quiet fox blending into morning mist, each print is a reflection of the wild’s quiet power.

🖼️ All prints are available by request, and I’m happy to offer custom sizes and finishes for your space.

Was it a morning like this?

The kind where the light creeps in quiet… before anyone realizes the world just changed.
I’ve lived long enough to rack up regrets. I’ve made bad decisions, let people down, and I still cuss and drink more than some would say a Christian should. I’m not perfect. Not even close. But I’m real. And most days, that’s the best I can offer.
Still, that tomb was empty, and it remains the only one empty throughout history.
And every time I think about that morning—the stone rolled away, the silence, the light—I remember: grace didn’t wait for me to get it all together. It showed up anyway.
He walked out of that grave knowing exactly who I am. And He still calls me His.

Evening Watch

After a quiet hike at Ellis Creek, just before heading back to my car, I paused to take in the scene that would become “Evening Watch.” The warm, golden light of late autumn stretched across the sky, creating the perfect backdrop. I have a habit of always “looking back” before leaving a spot, just to make sure I’m not missing anything. For me, it’s about finding the intimacy within a landscape—the small, quiet details that bring the larger picture to life.
A group of blackbirds perched silently on the branches of a tree caught my eye. Their dark silhouettes stood out against the golden glow of the sky. The last leaves of the season clung stubbornly to the branches, their faded yellows illuminated like tiny flames. The scene felt effortless, as if nature had composed it just for this moment. I knew this was a scene others would connect with—a timeless reminder of nature’s beauty and stillness.

As I framed the shot, I couldn’t help but think about how much the title I had thought of, “Evening Watch,” resonates with my military background. The concept of a watch—of standing guard, observing, and staying attuned to the world—is deeply ingrained in me.
There’s a quiet duty in watching over something, a sense of presence and purpose that this scene of blackbirds seemed to echo. Their calm vigilance reminded me of the moments I spent on watch, appreciating the stillness while remaining fully present. The air was still, and time seemed to slow as I took it all in.

For me, it’s also a reflection of my military roots—a connection between the natural world and the quiet strength of standing watch.
